A Typical IFS Session
During our time together, it will be an inward journey of self-discovery, love and power. I will guide you to heal the layers that bring us directly to your core Self, your truth, where you feel your best. By healing starting from the outer layers (our protectors), our behaviours and actions will automatically adjust and adopt new and more positive roles. We won’t be carrying around old wounds and tenderness which frees up more space in our system, releasing blockages and allowing energy to flow.
First we will pause, allowing you to stop and come into your body, your safe vessel. Then we will make a YOU-turn to detect the parts of you (Protectors) that are constrained and stuck in extreme roles. These parts may cause you anxiety, depression, unworthiness, overwhelming feelings, avoidance, etc. and soon you will become your own “parts detective” so you can separate from overwhelming emotions, gaining space to breathe and explore, both in session and on your own. These parts often came into these roles at a younger age when you went through a difficult experience and didn’t have the tools or resources to deal with it. These protectors still think you are that age and act accordingly. When we can compassionately share with these parts who you are now a significant unloading can happen.
We can only do this process when you are in Self Energy as we call it in the IFS world. Self Energy is who you were when you were born before difficult times and situations wounded you and created barriers. Your Self knows who you are, what you want, and how to get it, and also knows how to heal yourself. It’s a knowing, a feeling of self-love and love. When you are in Self Energy you will feel any of the 8 C’s: curious, compassionate, connected, calm, confident, creative, courageous, and clear. The more time you spend in Self Energy (a process I will teach you), the more trust you build up within your system, showing your parts that you are the leader and you are in charge. Everyone has Self Energy know matter who you are or what you have been through.
My role as a Practitioner is to always hold a safe and compassionate space in Self Energy so that your system will build trust and open up.
When there is enough trust we can meet your deep inner parts (Exiles) that have been exiled away to never be felt again by our protectors in order to keep us safe. The protectors tirelessly try to keep us from feeling the pain from both those past intense situations and any future similar situations, and while trying to keep us safe, this actually makes the exile parts cry out for help louder. For example an exiled part may feel alone, so anytime perceived rejection happens parts of us may overcompensate to do whatever it takes to feel loved by others even if it’s not helping, healthy, or productive.
So we can go to these exiled parts of us to heal them and listen to their stories; we can’t change the past but we can rewrite the story for these younger parts. When exiled parts can be unburdened from these heavy self-limiting beliefs it frees up space in our system to invite in positive qualities and innate gifts that were often pushed out by these situations. IFS is a beautiful model to pull from because we don’t change the external world or change how we are in the external world. We go to our internal world and learn about fears, listen to their roles and heal our parts, which easily changes the way we show up in the world. We aren’t triggered or activated by situations; instead we have inner peace and our inner power (purpose) is unleashed.
