What is IFS, and how it can benefit you?

WHAT IS IFS?

IFS (Internal Family Systems) is a powerful evidence-based model of psychotherapy, which holds that internally we have a family system of mini-personalities which we call parts.  When we get to know these parts’ jobs and fears within our system, we receive wisdom from them.  There are two types of parts in the IFS model: Protectors and Exiles. As a result of our life experiences, Exiles carry wounds or tender experiences, and Protectors keep the Exiles safe.  This can cause constrained and extreme behaviours with the protectors; although they have positive intentions.  In IFS we welcome all parts, there are no bad parts because they uniquely shape us.  We can learn and heal our parts which allows us to show up in life the way we want with the behaviours that we want.  IFS is a profound and life changing therapy which results in a lifestyle leading with curiosity, ease and radiating one’s inner power. 

IFS Origin

Dr Richard Schwartz began his career with IFS 30 years ago as a systemic family therapist and an academic. Grounded in systems thinking, Dr. Schwartz developed Internal Family Systems (IFS) in response to clients’ descriptions of various parts within themselves. He focused on the relationships among these parts and noticed that there were systemic patterns to the way they were organized across clients. He also found that when the clients’ parts felt safe and were allowed to relax, the clients would spontaneously experience the qualities of confidence, openness, and compassion that Dr. Schwartz came to call the Self. He found that when in that state of Self, clients would know how to heal their parts.

Stuck in a busy lifestyle loop with no down time, Anxiety, depression, loneliness, anger, hiding behind fear, addictive tendencies, binging, insomnia, seeking external validation and love, loose or rigid boundaries, defensiveness, checking out, critical of self and others, chronic pain, etc.

MY ROLE AS A PRACTITIONER

As your guide, I will hold a safe and compassionate space for your system.  I will help you connect with parts of yourself that are disconnected from your True Self allowing those parts to make  a YOU-turn.  As my client, I will guide you to face difficult inner feelings and emotions with ease and curiosity.  I will help you remove the clouds that can cover the bright, shining sun of your True Self,  so you can live life in the 8 Cs of Self: curiosity, compassion, creativity, calmness, consistency, confidence, connection and clarity.
